Fashion
Fashion has a major impact on our environment and causes a lot of pollution. In the last two decades alone we have begun to consume 400% more clothing than the years before! As we continue to consume fashion products, the demand increases and companies search for cheaper and faster ways to get their products to consumers. This is where fast fashion was born. In this post I will go over the harmful effects of fast fashion and how you can make steps towards having a more eco friendly closet!
1 | FAST FASHION
The first thing I want to quickly touch base with is fast fashion. Our favorite stores such as Forever 21, Topshop, and Urban Outfitters are all at fault. Now although we love these brands, it is time for us to wake up to the reality we are in. We cannot support these companies any longer. We have to start focusing on what truly matters and what money cannot buy or fix... our planet.
Fast fashion has become the 2nd biggest contributor to pollution! Right next to producing oil. This is because the main goal of fast fashion is to produce an abundance of goods at the lowest cost possible. This means not only are they paying their workers next to nothing, but they are also using cheap and non renewable materials. On top of this, producing these products emits a large amount of greenhouse gases and requires an immense amount of water and energy.
Now, this might seem bad enough as is, but it doesn't stop there. These fast fashion companies generally liked to use synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester, and acrylic which are all made of plastic. This means by simply wearing and washing your clothes you are slowly contributing to the shedding of microfibers which in turn pollutes our environment.
From start to finish, fast fashion continues to put a dent in our environment's health and deepen our carbon footprint. But don't worry, I am going to share with you ways that you can stop supporting these brand and move towards eco conscious choices.
2 | ETHICAL, ECO FRIENDLY, AND AFFORDABLE CLOTHING COMPANIES
Now, the first option is to buy from companies that are ethical and use more eco friendly products. I know that not everyone can afford the high prices that handmade or eco friendly clothing brands offer, so I handpicked a couple of stores that are affordable, ethical, and cute.
About |Kotn is a really great company that focuses on simple clothing and basics. They use a special type of Egyptian Cotton that is very fine and soft, unlike generic cotton. Kotn has partnered with family farmers that live in Egypt and they aim to change the clothing industry from the inside out.
Price Range | $20-78
About | Mayamiko is a super cute clothing store that is ethically made in Malawi. They focus on bringing ethically affordable and eco friendly clothing to the market.
Price Range | $20-130
About | Klow is a brand that is committed to the health of our planet and their workers. Their clothes are super aesthetic and are made from great materials!
Price Range | $5-200
About | This is a great company that focuses on several things; the environment, communities in need, and ethical standards in the fashion industry.
Price Range | $18-98
About | Most of their products are under $100 and offer a wide variety of choices. They are very upfront about where they manufacture their clothing and the materials that are used.
Price Range | $12-235
3 | THRIFT SHOPPING
Everyone loves a good thrift find. Not only is it an easy way to find cute and unique clothes but it is also a very inexpensive form of shopping. You can easily walk out with 10 items of clothing for $30 or less! But, not only is thrifting a great way to save money it is also a step towards living a more eco friendly life!
By opting to thrift shopping rather than buying directly from a fast fashion company, you are not only not supporting them any longer, but you are also recycling these fast fashion items. This in turns stops the endless cycle of buy, throw away, repeat.
Thrifting is a great way for people to find retro, couture, or interesting items at an extremely affordable price. Therefore, you can save the planet while saving money. This is definitely my favorite form of shopping as I don't have to worry about spending my whole paycheck and I know that I am being eco conscious!
Here are some of my favorite stores that are local to the OC area:
1. The Salvation Army - they have 50% off every Wednesday!!!
2. Uptown Cheapskate - they have more in style clothes from your favorite brands
3. Second Impressions - super inexpensive thrift store that is a non profit organization that helps the homeless and victims of human trafficking.
4 | CONCLUSION
All in all, the environment is an extremely important factor in our lives and our future. By simply thrift shopping or taking an extra second to consider where you’re buying your clothes from you can make a difference. I hope that this post not only taught you something new about the fast fashion industry but also showed you ways that you can help reduce your carbon footprint!
